Freud

Schnitzels to write home to Mutti about!

Freud is Greenwich Village’s answer to central European culinary heritage, where Michelin-starred chef Eduard Frauneder riffs on Austrian classics inspired by his hometown of Vienna. The menu includes several shared plates; but if you’re feeling greedy, a particularly memorable old/new fusion is the delightful burger topped with crispy fennel and farmhouse cheddar which you can revel in all by yourself.

Their Wiener schnitzel – that same, pleasure-inducing classic Frauneder serves at his other restaurant Edi & the Wolf – is nothing short of mind-blowing. The wine list is just as intriguing, focusing on natural, organic and biodynamic wines, most of which stem from this and other schnitzel-appreciating countries. Not to be outdone by their cocktail selection served on the rustic and mahogany bar, always reminiscent of that old-meets-new European charm.

The interior is sophisticated yet accessible; the use of bricks and wood in the interior space harken back to turn-of-the-century brasseries typical of old-country Austria, with vintage Thonet chairs, leather banquettes and glasswork. In spring and summer, the patio opens to extend this gentle space. There’s a whole lot to love about Freud – pure happiness – a little slice of the old world.
